Description
Treat-Brite 291 is a compound for treatment of heavy metal contaminated wastewater and sludge. This product uses a chemical coagulation process to precipitate metal ions (including zinc, iron, mercury, chromium, lead, copper, aluminum and nickel) out of solution and encapsulate them into an inert slurry. This slurry, once de-watered, forms a sandy particulate that generally can be sent to landfill (consult with local authorities prior to disposal). Heavy metal concentrations in the treated wastewater solution are reduced to well below acceptable sewer discharge limits.
Directions
Step 1: Prior to treatment with Treat-Brite 291, adjust wastewater pH to 4.0.
Step 2: Treatment typically requires anywhere from 1.5 - 20 grams of Treat-Brite 291 per litre of wastewater, depending on the concentration of metal ions in the wastewater solution. Mix water and the desired amount of Treat-Brite 291 in a 5 gallon pail until a slurry solution forms.
Step 3: Begin adding the slurry solution to the wastewater with agitation. Add enough 291 to bring the solution to a pH of 12. Allow at least 1 hour for chemical coagulation to occur, preferably with agitation of the solution. Check solution pH after the standing period to ensure that it is still at 12. If the pH has dropped, add enough 291 slurry to adjust the pH back to 12.
Step 4: Pump the treated water solution to sewer discharge (check with local authorities as to acceptable pH limits for sewer discharge and adjust pH as necessary). Transfer the sludge to a filter press or de-watering barrel. Once de-watered, dispose of the precipitate as per local regulations.
Caution
Treat-Brite 291 contains calcium oxide. Prolonged exposure to skin will cause dryness, irritation, and possibly minor burns. Rubber gloves are recommended when handling this product. Avoid inhalation of dust.
